A non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch!

Our Show

Purlie Victorious by Ossie Davis is a comedic play about Purlie Victorious Judson, a determined preacher who returns to his Georgia hometown to claim a church and confront the oppressive landowner, Ol' Cap'n. With the help of his fiancée, Lutiebelle, Purlie challenges racial injustices and seeks freedom, dignity, and equality. The play blends humor, satire, and social commentary to explore themes of resistance and the complexities of race and power in 20th-century America.

Juneteenth Celebration

GLP was honored to present Purlie Victorious in celebration of Juneteenth, a pivotal moment in history marking the end of slavery in the United States. This powerful play, full of humor and social commentary, was the perfect way to commemorate the courage and resilience of those who fought for freedom. As we reflect on this important day, we acknowledge Galveston’s deep connection to Juneteenth as the birthplace of the holiday, where enslaved people were first informed of their freedom on June 19, 1865. Juneteenth serves as a reminder of the ongoing journey toward justice and equality.

Our Partnerships

We partnered with the historic Old Central Cultural Center, the first African American high school in Texas, to help restore this incredible building. We were honored to perform in such a meaningful space that holds so much history and significance for the Galveston community. A special thank you to the Old Central Cultural Center for graciously opening their doors to us and for their ongoing efforts to preserve this important piece of history.
