The Second production of Galveston Wind, a historical drama by local playwright John Meiners Jr., debuted at Baytown Little Theater on May 14. Directed by Samuel Gorashko, the play brought to life the devastating impact of the 1900 Galveston Hurricane through a compelling narrative centered around a family navigating love, loss, and survival. The story, a fictionalized account intertwined with real historical figures, followed the relationships and struggles of those living in Galveston at the time of the storm. Much of the play took place at The Beacon, a finishing school for girls, where headmistress Anna Marie Thayer and attorney Charles Beaujeaux found love amidst the looming disaster. Their daughters, Charlotte and Mary, along with their romantic interests, Anton and Frederick Brenner, represented the next generation’s hope and dreams—dreams threatened by the storm’s catastrophic force.
The production was a collaborative effort, with playwright John Meiners Jr. working closely alongside the cast and crew to refine the show’s historical accuracy and emotional depth. The team included Assistant Director Isabel Deleon, Production Assistant Crystal Hart, Technical Director Taylor Dobbs, and Stage Manager Chris Mims, among many others. Their hard work ensured an immersive experience, with period-accurate costumes, authentic set pieces, and a powerful sound and lighting design that recreated the terrifying force of the hurricane. Director Samuel Gorashko expressed his gratitude for the unique opportunity to work directly with Meiners, tailoring the play to fit Baytown Little Theater’s intimate setting while honoring the true stories that inspired it.
Following its Baytown debut, Galveston Wind was performed in Galveston on September 10 at the historic 1929 Scottish Rite Cathedral, marking a significant moment as the story returned to the very city it depicted. The production made use of some of the theater’s original stage drops, blending history with performance in a truly unique way. The play’s portrayal of resilience in the face of overwhelming tragedy resonated deeply with audiences, sparking discussions about the forgotten victims of the 1900 Storm and the strength of those who survived. Gorashko and his team’s dedication to bringing this powerful story to life ensured that Galveston Wind would leave a lasting impact, setting the stage for future productions of this poignant historical drama.
